1 day until golf: Tiger's iconic ace at 1997 Phoenix Open
The PGA Tour plans to restart its season June 11 after halting due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each day until then, we'll highlight key moments, people, or facts relating to where we are in the countdown.
Long before the massive stadium setup filled with beer-drinking fans that now surrounds the famous 16th hole during the Phoenix Open, Tiger Woods electrified an equally rowdy crowd in 1997 with perhaps the most iconic hole-in-one ever.
At the time, Woods was only 10 starts into his professional career, but he already had three PGA Tour victories to his name. Everyone wanted to catch a glimpse of the 21-year-old sensation living up to sky-high expectations. And, boy, did he ever provide a show for fans at TPC Scottsdale.
The celebration, the emotion, and Tiger's raise-the-roof gesture to the crowd ... does it get any better than that?
Even though Woods didn't win the 1997 Phoenix Open, this highlight stands out as one of his greatest ever.
Tiger created another historic moment three months after his ace in Phoenix with a record-setting 12-shot win at the 1997 Masters for his first career major title.
That's a wrap, folks! The countdown is officially over with the PGA Tour returning Thursday. Thank you for following along, and enjoy the live golf!
