2 days until golf: Predictions to win each major championship in 2020

The PGA Tour plans to restart its season June 11 after halting due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each day until then, we'll highlight key moments, people, or facts relating to where we are in the countdown.

Questions about golf's return have been asked, players to be excited about have been discussed, and non-major events to look forward to were previewed. But now - with only two days until the return of the PGA Tour - it's time to talk about the biggest tournaments remaining on the 2020 calendar.

Here are two picks to win each major championship in 2020:

When: Aug. 6-9
Where: TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, California

Picks

Jon Rahm

The Spaniard loves California golf, with both of his solo victories on the PGA Tour coming in the Golden State. The world No. 2 is also primed to break through on the big stage. He's come close in recent majors - five top-11 finishes in his last eight attempts - and he held the 54-hole lead at the 2019 Players Championship. His first major win is coming soon, and TPC Harding Park sets up perfectly.

Sungjae Im

The hiatus came at a poor time for Im, who won the Honda Classic and moved into No. 1 on the FedEx Cup points list prior to the stoppage. However, no one grinds as much as the South Korean, and he likely played on a daily basis while the PGA Tour was on pause. He will probably be in midseason form for the restart and should be peaking right in time for the season's first major.

When: Sept. 17-20
Where: Winged Foot, Mamaroneck, New York

Picks

Rory McIlroy

Picking the No. 1 player in the world to win a major is the definition of a safe bet. With that said, McIlroy's the best driver of the ball in the world, which will always provide him with a huge advantage during tough U.S. Open conditions. Additionally, the major's move to September could bring cooler temperatures, which shouldn't bother the Northern Irishman.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele's U.S. Open track record is remarkable. In three attempts at America's national open, the 26-year-old's worst finish is a tie for sixth in 2018. He's quickly building a major resume resembling that of the game's elite and is a win away from entering the conversation as one of the world's best.

The Masters

When: Nov. 12-15
Where: Augusta National, Augusta, Georgia

Picks

Justin Thomas

There's something about fall golf that brings out the best in Thomas. Eight of his 12 PGA Tour wins have come between the months of August to December, so the Masters' move to the fall should bode well for the 27-year-old. He's also ideally suited to win at Augusta and has improved upon his previous result in all four of his Masters appearances.

Patrick Cantlay

Cantlay quietly goes about his business with one quality finish after another, so much so that it may surprise people to learn he's the eighth-ranked player in the world. His calm demeanor, along with the experience he gained while briefly holding the lead on Sunday of the 2019 Masters, will also come in handy when pressure is high as he pursues his first green jacket this November.
