Tony Finau fired a 6-under 66 in Round 1 of the Memorial Tournament on Thursday, taking an early one-shot lead while many big names struggled in windy conditions.

Finau made nine birdies on the day - including four on his last five holes - to pull away from the field. The 30-year-old ranks second in strokes gained: off the tee and sits first in putting through one round.

"I felt good. I played nicely. I think I scored it about as good as I could," Finau said.

Finau's 66 was nearly eight strokes better than the field's first-round scoring average.

"I think on a golf course like this in these conditions, it really forces you to think about every shot and stay in the present, and that's what I was able to do today and score the golf ball," he said.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 1:

Place Player To Par R1 Score
1 Tony Finau -6 66
2 Ryan Palmer -5 67
T3 Brendan Steele -4 68
T3 Gary Woodland -4 68
T5 Charles Howell III -3 69
T5 Lucas Glover -3 69
T5 Jon Rahm -3 69

Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Cantlay all sit just outside the top five at 2-under par.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, signed for a 1-under 71 in his first PGA Tour round since February.

Though the aforementioned players managed to figure out Muirfield Village Golf Club through 18 holes, many superstars could not.

Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler failed to shoot in the 70s, posting rounds of 80 and 81, respectively. World No. 11 Xander Schauffele shot 6-over. Webb Simpson and Collin Morikawa - last week's winner at Muirfield - both posted 4-over 76s.

The long-hitting Bryson DeChambeau ended the day at 1-over and Brooks Koepka birdied the final hole to shoot even par.
