Finau, Palmer share 1-shot lead midway through Memorial Tournament
Tony Finau and Ryan Palmer share a one-shot lead after 36 holes at the Memorial Tournament.
Finau, who held the outright lead after Round 1, followed up his opening-round 66 by shooting 3-under on Friday. He made two quick bogeys but battled back with five birdies in his final 13 holes.
"I was really happy with the finish, the way I finished," Finau said. "Not the ideal start, but I knew I couldn't look back after 12; just keep on plugging along and try to hit good shot after good shot, and was able to execute a lot better after that."
Palmer posted a 4-under 68 to match Finau at 9-under for the event.
Jon Rahm narrowed the gap on the leaders with a 5-under performance on Day 2. The Spaniard can reach world No. 1 status with a victory at Muirfield Village if Rory McIlroy finishes worse than tied for second.
Here's how the top of the leaderboard sits at the event's halfway point:
Place | Player | To Par | R2 Score |
---|---|---|---|
T1 | Ryan Palmer | -9 | 68 |
T1 | Tony Finau | -9 | 69 |
3 | Jon Rahm | -8 | 67 |
T4 | Gary Woodland | -6 | 70 |
T4 | Chez Reavie | -6 | 67 |
T4 | Luke List | -6 | 68 |
7 | Jason Day | -5 | 66 |
Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, and Patrick Cantlay are among eight players sharing the eighth spot at 4-under.
Justin Thomas (3-under) and McIlroy (2-under) secured their Saturday tee times with rounds of 67 and 72, respectively.
Tiger Woods signed for a 4-over 76 to sit outside the cutline at the end of his round. His standing improved through the day, however, as tough scoring conditions in the afternoon allowed the 44-year-old to barely sneak into the weekend.
Brooks Koepka was in a similar position after making a double-bogey on his final hole. He too made the cut on the number at 3-over par.
Rickie Fowler (5-over), Justin Rose (5-over), Bryson DeChambeau (5-over), and Dustin Johnson (16-over) were among the notables to miss the cut.
DeChambeau made a quintuple-bogey 10 on No. 15 to fall way down the leaderboard. Johnson failed to break 80 in both rounds at Muirfield in his first start since winning the Travelers Championship.
Round 3 begins Saturday at 7:30 a.m. ET. Here's the weekend broadcast schedule:
