Finau trails leaders by 1 midway through 3M Open
Tony Finau trails co-leaders Richy Werenski and Michael Thompson by one stroke after Round 2 of the 3M Open.
Finau shot 66 on Friday to get to 11-under. His 5-under second round consisted of four birdies and a beautiful hole-out eagle to get into contention for the second week in a row.
The 30-year-old, who held the 36-hole lead at last week's Memorial Tournament, has 28 top-10 finishes without a win on the PGA Tour since 2016 - his only victory came at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. Tommy Fleetwood has the second-most with 16.
Werenski and Thompson posted rounds of 67 and 66, respectively. The 28-year-old Werenski was also the first-round leader.
Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 2:
Place | Player | To Par | R2 Score |
---|---|---|---|
T1 | Richy Werenski | -12 | 67 |
T1 | Michael Thompson | -12 | 67 |
T3 | Tony Finau | -11 | 66 |
T3 | Talor Gooch | -11 | 65 |
5 | Xixjun Zhang | -10 | 67 |
T6 | Matthew Wolff | -9 | 68 |
T6 | Cameron Davis | -9 | 66 |
Matthew Wolff put himself in a position to defend his title in Minnesota. The 21-year-old signed for a bogey-free 68 in Round 2.
A field lacking in star power will be even weaker on the weekend. Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, Paul Casey, and Bubba Watson all missed the cut after Dustin Johnson withdrew following his first-round 78. Finau is the highest-ranked player remaining.
