Thompson, Werenski share 2-shot lead after Round 3 of 3M Open
Michael Thompson and Richy Werenski share a two-shot lead at the 3M Open after matching rounds of 3-under 68s in Round 3.
The duo co-led by one after Round 2 and managed to extend the edge over Tony Finau and Charl Schwartzel despite posting scores near the field's third-round average.
Thompson led by four at one point but played his final six holes at 1-over while Werenski made a late run.
"It's definitely good to have a strong finish like that," Werenski said after making birdies on three of his final four holes.
He added: "I did a good job of just kind of hanging in there. ... (And) gave myself a chance going into tomorrow."
Finau failed to make noise on moving day for the second consecutive week. He stumbled out of the gates with a 1-over start through seven holes, but he recovered to add four birdies to his scorecard for a 2-under 69 and remain in contention.
"I didn't swing it as good as I did the first couple days," Finau said. "I was able to battle and I think a pretty respectable 69 on a day where the wind was enough to make it tough out there. I think we got in a nice groove and we were able to make some birdies coming down towards the end, which was nice."
Here's how the top of the leaderboard looks with one round remaining:
Place | Player | To Par | R3 Score |
---|---|---|---|
T1 | Michael Thompson | -15 | 68 |
T1 | Richy Werenksi | -15 | 68 |
T3 | Charl Schwartzel | -13 | 66 |
T3 | Tony Finau | -13 | 69 |
5 | Max Homa | -12 | 64 |
Max Homa fired the lowest round among those within three of the lead. His 7-under 64 vaulted him up 19 spots into fifth.
Due to anticipated inclement weather in the Blaine, Minnesota, area Sunday, Round 4 of the 3M Open will be played in threesomes teeing off Nos. 1 and 10. The round now begins at 10:59 a.m. ET, with the final group of Thompson, Werenski, and Schwartzel starting at 1:00 p.m.
