DeChambeau overpowers Winged Foot for 6-shot U.S. Open victory

Bryson DeChambeau fired a sizzling 3-under 67 on Sunday to pull away from the field and claim a six-shot U.S. Open victory for his first major championship title.

DeChambeau overpowered Winged Foot Golf Club - a course believed to be too difficult to succumb to the sport's modern distance - for the fourth straight day. He did not card an over-par round to finish as the only player under par for the tournament and was the only player in the 60s on Sunday.

The 27-year-old started the round trailing Matthew Wolff by two but quickly erased the deficit by playing the tough opening five holes at 1-under. After the two exchanged eagles on No. 9, DeChambeau took a one-shot edge into the back nine and saw it grow as he cruised to a dominant win.

With his victory, DeChambeau joins the elite company of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only three players to win a U.S. Open, the U.S. Amateur, and an NCAA Division I individual title.

"It's just an honor," DeChambeau said. "I don't know what else to say. It's been a lot of hard work.

"Mr. Nicklaus has been always awesome to me. He gave me a sponsor's invite. Tiger has always been great to me. I can't say thank you enough to them for them helping me push me along to be a better person and a better golfer, as well. But to be in the likes of the names of that company is special. I'll forever appreciate that."

The win is DeChambeau's seventh on the PGA Tour and second in 2020.

Wolff managed to hang on to second place despite shooting 75. The 21-year-old has now finished inside the top four in both of his major championship starts.

Xander Schauffele collected his fourth straight top-six showing in a U.S. Open. He becomes the first player to begin a U.S. Open career with four consecutive finishes inside the top 10 since Bobby Jones, who did so in the 1920s, according to the 15th Club's Justin Ray.

Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy finished in a share for eighth at 6-over.

The Masters is the next major championship on the schedule, which takes place from Nov. 12-15.
