McIlroy: 'My mind has been wandering' with birth of 1st child expected soon
Rory McIlroy's performances on the course the last few weeks have been below the former world No. 1's standards. He's yet to finish inside the top 10 since the PGA Tour's restart and has only cracked the top 30 once.
However, his run of poor finishes became a lot more understandable with the news that McIlroy's wife, Erica, is expecting the birth of their first child in the coming days.
"I think from the get-go my mind has been wandering the last few weeks, and now you guys sort of know the reason why," McIlroy explained following his 73 at the BMW Championship on Saturday.
McIlroy said he's been playing the last few events without knowing if he is going to finish the round or not.
"I'm just waiting for a phone call," he said. "I was waiting for a phone call last week and it didn't come, and then Harry (Rory's caddie) has been keeping his phone in his pocket just to make sure, but nothing as of yet."
What if that phone call comes during Sunday's final round?
"I'm out of here," McIlroy said.
He also stated he'll withdraw from next week's Tour Championship - where McIlroy will attempt to win consecutive FedEx Cups and collect another $15-million paycheck - in the event his wife goes into labor during the tournament.
"I'm going to play in many more Tour Championships and it's only going to be the birth of your first child once. That trumps anything else," McIlroy said.
