Defending champ Woodland says he's been playing through torn labrum
Following his second straight 74 and a likely missed cut at Winged Foot, Gary Woodland revealed he was playing through a torn labrum in his left hip while attempting to defend his U.S. Open title.
"I've got a lot of pain in there, and I've been fighting through it," Woodland said Friday. "But it gets to a point where you're playing against the best players in the world, you just can't play with pain. I've played with pain my whole life, but it's getting a little tough."
He plans on seeing a specialist for the injury Monday to assess his next steps.
"It's frustrating," Woodland explained. "Especially because this meant a lot to me coming back here defending. I put a lot of time and effort into it, and if your body doesn't let you do it, you just can't do it, and that's frustrating."
Woodland said he's been dealing with the pain for the last six weeks. He's finished inside the top 50 once over his last four events, not including the U.S. Open.
