Grillo maintains lead at Mayakoba Classic ahead of final round
Emiliano Grillo maintained his position atop the Mayakoba Golf Classic leaderboard after shooting 68 in Round 3 but saw his lead dwindle to one shot with 18 holes remaining.
The Argentine entered Saturday's round with a four-shot edge and carded five birdies. However, a number of chasers narrowed the gap with brilliant showings at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, including Viktor Hovland and Justin Thomas.
Hovland rebounded from an opening-hole bogey to fire an 8-under 63. He birdied four of his final six holes to secure his place in Sunday's final group.
Thomas vaulted into contention with the lowest score of Round 3. His 63 put him into a tie for fifth and only four shots behind Grillo.
Here's how the leaderboard stands going into the final round:
Place | Player | To Par | R3 Score |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Emiliano Grillo | -16 | 68 |
2 | Tom Hoge | -15 | 65 |
3 | Viktor Hovland | -14 | 63 |
4 | Adam Long | -13 | 63 |
T5 | Justin Thomas | -12 | 62 |
T5 | Patrick Rodgers | -12 | 65 |
Tony Finau fell into a share of seventh despite a 2-under round. After he made a hole-in-one on No. 4 to get within three of the lead at 11-under, Finau failed to keep pace with the leaders by playing his remaining holes at even par.
Round 4 - the final day of golf on the PGA Tour for 2020 - is being pushed to the morning due to inclement weather expected Sunday afternoon. The round begins at 8:10 a.m. ET with the final group off at 10:00 a.m.
