Recent results
Australia's Marc Leishman came from behind last year with a final-round 65 to steal the title away from Rahm. Leishman hit less than 50% of his fairways at the tough Torrey Pines setup but rode an incredibly hot putter.
The last few events at Torrey Pines have provided some thrilling finishes, including a Monday morning playoff in 2018 in which Jason Day came out on top. It was also the site of Rahm's first PGA Tour victory in 2017 when he drained a 60-foot eagle putt on the 18th to secure the win.
Previous Winners
2020: Marc Leishman (-15) over Jon Rahm
2019: Justin Rose (-21) over Adam Scott
2018: Jason Day (-10) in a playoff over Alex Noren, Ryan Palmer
2017: Jon Rahm (-13) over Charles Howell, C.T. Pan
2016: Brandt Snedeker (-6) over K.J. Choi
2015: Jason Day (-9) over three players
2014: Scott Stallings (-9) over four players
2013: Tiger Woods (-14) over Brandt Snedeker, Josh Teater
The field
McIlroy will make his 2021 debut on the PGA Tour this week after playing in the European Tour's season opener in Abu Dhabi. Rahm is in action after he pulled out of last week's event prior to teeing off because he tweaked something while working out at home.
Other notables such as Schauffele, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, Matthew Wolff, Patrick Reed, Harris English, Viktor Hovland, and Adam Scott make for a loaded group in Southern California.

The course
The event will be played on both courses at the Torrey Pines property. The South Course - playing as a par 72 at 7,765 yards - will be used three times, and the North Course - a 7,258-yard par 72 - will be played by each golfer in only one of the two opening rounds.
Both setups tend to reward length over accuracy off the tee and place an emphasis on the short game due to Torrey's small and well-guarded greens.
