Woods 'awake, responsive, recovering' after surgery

Tiger Woods is on the mend following emergency surgery after being involved in a single-vehicle crash near Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.

"He is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room," his representatives wrote in a statement on his Twitter account Wednesday morning.

Woods' camp also confirmed he underwent a procedure on his lower right leg and ankle after being taken to hospital.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, provided further details.

"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia," Dr. Mahajan said in the statement. "Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

It was reported Tuesday that Woods suffered a shattered ankle and two leg fractures.

Authorities haven't released the cause of his accident, though he was reportedly traveling at a high speed and lost control of the vehicle before crossing the center median. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Many across the sports world publicly expressed support for Woods following the accident.

The 45-year-old hosted but didn't take part in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in L.A. last weekend. He was recovering from back surgery, a procedure he underwent in December.
