Scheffler, Johnson among quarterfinal winners at WGC-Match Play
Following an exciting Round of 16 earlier Saturday, the quarterfinals have come to an end for the WGC-Match Play event at Austin Country Club.
After taking down defending champion Billy Horschel in the Round of 16, Scottie Scheffler showed no signs of stopping with a 3&2 win over Seamus Power to become the first player to advance to the semifinals.
No. 5 Scottie Scheffler 3&2 over No. 42 Seamus Power
Scheffler, last year's runner-up, either led or was all square with Power for the entirety of the match. The two-time TOUR winner secured the victory with a hole-out eagle on the 16th hole. If Scheffler wins both his matches on Sunday to win the tournament, the 25-year-old will move into the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, according to Golf.com.
No. 8 Dustin Johnson 2-up over No. 16 Brooks Koepka
After trailing for most of the front nine, Johnson climbed back to win the match by two over Koepka when the pair finished the final hole. After going 3-0-0 in the group stage, Johnson is still undefeated at the tournament.
No. 29 Kevin Kisner 4&3 over No. 24 Will Zalatoris
Kisner held the lead for the entire match over Zalatoris, whose Round of 16 match went an extra four holes prior. Kisner grabbed the lead early and at one point led by five before eventually securing the victory by the end of the 15th hole. Like Johnson, Kisner remains undefeated.
No. 36 Corey Conners 2-up over No. 15 Abraham Ancer
Like Scheffler, Conners also either led or was all square for the entirety of his match with Ancer. The Canadian birdied the final hole to win the match by two points. Conners is the lowest-seeded player to move on to the semifinals this year at No. 36. He joins Johnson and Kisner as the tournament's undefeated players thus far (Paul Casey withdrew from his opening match against Conners).
