Scheffler matches Masters record with 5-shot lead after 36 holes
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler shot a 5-under 67 at Augusta National on Friday to take a five-shot lead to the weekend at the Masters.
Scheffler's 36-hole score of 136 ties the record for the largest lead in Masters history, a feat six golfers have now accomplished. Four of the previous five men to accomplish the task went on to win the tournament.
Charl Schwartzel, Sungjae Im, Shane Lowry, and Hideki Matsuyama are all tied for second at 3-under, with a group of four players, including Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith, tied for sixth at 2-under.

Scheffler's 5-under matched for the lowest round of the day with Justin Thomas, who's tied for 10th at 1-under, after shooting a 4-over 76 on Thursday.
The 25-year-old was undoubtedly the hottest player coming into this week's Masters Tournament. Scheffler only just grabbed his first TOUR victory in February at the Phoenix Open, but he's since notched two more wins for three victories in his past five starts. A victory this weekend would make it four wins in his past six starts.
Scheffler's most recent win - the WGC Match-Play just two weeks ago in Austin, Texas - was enough to move him into the World No. 1 spot, knocking out Jon Rahm, who held the spot since July 2021.
Lowry had the second-lowest round of the day with a 4-under 68. He was one of only 13 players to shoot a round under-par on Friday.
Tiger Woods did not shoot an under-par round on Friday, but the five-time Masters winner's 2-over 74 was enough to make the cut.
At the par-3 16th, eight-time TOUR winner Stewart Cink recorded a hole-in-one with his son on the bag for him during the second round. Tommy Fleetwood made a hole-in-one on the same hole at last year's Masters, and Thomas made one in 2019. Both Fleetwood and Thomas made the cut this year, while Cink did not.
Jordan Spieth, the 2015 Masters champion, fell short for the first time in nine appearances at Augusta. Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Xander Schauffele were the other notable players who missed the cut.
Scheffler will tee off alongside Schwartzel in the final pairing at 2:50 p.m. ET on Saturday.
