Hideki Matsuyama withdrew from the BMW Championship on Friday due to a lower-back injury, the TOUR announced.
Matsuyama was in contention after firing an opening-round 67 at Castle Pines on Thursday but will be unable to complete the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
If healthy, Matsuyama will still be able to play in next week's season finale at the TOUR Championship as he currently sits third on the season-long points list behind only Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.
Matsuyama has two wins this season, including last week's FedEx St. Jude Championship. He's recorded six top-10 finishes across 17 events and also captured a bronze medal representing Japan at the Olympics in Paris.
