McCarty wins Black Desert Championship in 3rd TOUR start
Matt McCarty won the inaugural Black Desert Championship by three strokes over Stephan Jaeger on Sunday to secure a victory in just his third PGA TOUR start.
Place | Player | Total to par | Round 4 score |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Matt McCarty | -23 | 67 |
2 | Stephan Jaeger | -20 | 68 |
T-3 | Kevin Streelman | -19 | 69 |
T-3 | Lucas Glover | -19 | 62 |
5 | Matti Schmid | -18 | 62 |
McCarty's lead shrank to one shot after he recorded his first of two bogeys of the round on No. 12, but an eagle on the par-4 14th helped him pull away. He ended the day in style with a birdie on the last hole.
"It was good, hard-fought," he said. "A lot of tough pins with the wind picking up. Just was able to hit my spots well enough and just kind of hang around and have a lot of stress-free pars, which is nice. ... A pretty surreal moment."
Lucas Glover climbed the leaderboard in dramatic fashion during the final round. He started Sunday's action nine shots back of McCarty for the lead, which would have matched Stewart Cink (2004 RBC Heritage) for the second-largest comeback win since the beginning of the 1983 season, per PGA TOUR Communications.
McCarty picked up three wins on the Korn Ferry Tour this past summer at the Price Cutter Charity Championship, the Pinnacle Bank Championship, and the Albertsons Boise Open.
The 26-year-old's strong performance earned him a promotion to the PGA TOUR. He's tied with Bob Gilder, Seve Ballesteros, and Russell Henley for the third-fewest starts before his first PGA TOUR victory since 1970.
McCarty is also just the second player to win on TOUR in the same season he earned a Korn Ferry Tour three-victory promotion.
"To do it like this, I don't know how you can kind of expect this, to be honest," he said. "I don't know, it's just a lot of fun, and I've been working really hard. This year was great for me out there. ... It's just been a crazy last few months for me."
