Atlanta sinks The Bay to set up TGL final with New York
Atlanta Drive GC cruised to a 9-3 victory Tuesday night over No. 2 seed The Bay Golf Club in the second TGL semifinal.
Justin Thomas' team will face New York Golf Club in a best-of-three final for the inaugural SoFi Cup, which begins at 9 p.m. ET Monday. The second clash will tee off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and a deciding match will follow at 9 p.m. if necessary.
"I like our team and I like our chances," Thomas said. "I'm excited. It's gonna be a lot of fun."
Atlanta - which also features Billy Horschel and Patrick Cantlay - narrowly lost its regular-season clash against The Bay 6-5 in what was its only defeat of the campaign.
It was a different story Tuesday night. Atlanta jumped out to a 4-2 lead heading into the singles component and put away the win with a three-point victory on the 12th hole.
The Bay Golf Club finished first in the TGL with 17 triples holes won during the regular season. However, the team, led by Shane Lowry, Min Woo Lee, and Ludvig Aberg, was undone by putting struggles in the semifinal. The Bay didn't make a single putt through five attempts in its first nine holes, and Lee sank the team's only putt - an impressive 19-footer - on the 14th hole when the match was already out of hand.
Atlanta finished the regular season with a league-leading 18 singles points won - 10 more than The Bay.
New York upset the top-seeded Los Angeles Golf Club 6-4 Monday in the first semifinal. Atlanta faced New York in its first TGL match and prevailed 4-0.
"Our team's played well most every match," Cantlay said. "We've had a lot of close matches and hit shots when we needed to, just like tonight. We'll take that into next week and I think we’re all excited for the final."
