Amateur champ Michael McCoy, 51, fails to make cut

Michael McCoy's run at the Masters was short but sweet.

The U.S. mid-amateur champion shot an 11-over 83 Friday, thereby failing to make the projected cut and bringing an end to his dream of playing at Augusta National.

McCoy, an 11-time Iowa Amateur Player of the Year, shot an opening-round 78 to finish the tournament +17. Earlier this week, the insurance executive from West Des Moines put the journey all in perspective.

"As much golf as I've played, you can't help but think, 'Well, what would it be like (to play in the Masters)?'" McCoy told the Des Moines Register. "I'm certainly going to try and enjoy every minute of it."

McCoy enjoyed a few personal highlights over his two-day run at Augusta, recording a pair of first-round birdies, and birdying 13 on Friday. All this alongside his caddy and 23-year-old son, Nate, who plays on the Canadian Tour.

The 51-year-old pro is the second-oldest rookie to participate in the 78-year history of the Masters.
