17-year-old high school senior Scottie Scheffler makes cut at Byron Nelson Championship
For aspiring golfers, following in the footsteps of Jordan Spieth is a promising path toward becoming a mainstay on the PGA Tour.
Scottie Scheffler, 17, made the cut in his first professional event Friday when he tapped in for par on the 36th hole of the HP Byron Nelson Championship. Similarly, Spieth, who also hails from Dallas, made the same cut as a 16-year-old tour rookie four years ago.
The only difference, albeit nitpicking, is that Scheffler waited until his senior season of high school to start making noise.
But much like his predecessor, Scheffler has lofty aspirations in the sport and doesn't appear satisfied with made cuts. The Highland Park High School amateur remains steadfast in scaling the leaderboard and obtaining his goal of finishing in the top ten.
"I think that would be a nice debut out here," Scheffler told Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com.
Scheffler remains seven shots behind Brendon Todd, who leads heading into the third round.
