Erik Compton didn't know if he would live to see another hour, another minute when he was racing to the hospital in 2007 and calling family members telling them he loved them.
When Compton was 12 he received his first heart transplant and took up golf to keep himself in shape with a low-impact sport. Years later he found himself in need of another heart and with some luck he found one.
Sitting tied for second at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, Compton sits five strokes back of leader Martin Kaymer. Four bogeys, five birdies and an eagle were enough to shoot a 3-under third-round 67.
Compton is looking to capture his first PGA Tour win, his only other professional win came on the Web.com Tour in 2011.
Playing with his third heart, a major win would be something special for not only 34-year-old Compton but for all those in attendance.
