Starting the day conceding the first two holes wasn't in Rickie Fowler's playbook and certainly wasn't what captain Tom Watson wanted to see. Europe's Rory McIlroy is playing confidently - that's dangerous.
Through the first three holes, McIlroy won them both, going 3-up early on Fowler.
Jordan Spieth started his day with his approach in the bunker, but an unfortunate lip-out on No. 1 for Graeme McDowell halved the hole and it's been all Spieth since. He sits 2-up on McDowell through three.
Phil Mickelson is back on the course in the fifth matchup of the day after pleading with Tom Watson to let him play by text message Saturday. He was given a stern "No." Stephen Gallacher is his opponent today.
The U.S. needs to win eight and a half points Sunday to win the Ryder Cup, Europe only needs four.
