3 takeaways from UFC Busan

UFC Busan took place Saturday morning at Sajik Arena in Busan, South Korea. In the main event, featherweight contender Chan Sung Jung finished Frankie Edgar by TKO in the first round.

Here are three takeaways from the promotion's final event of the decade.

'Korean Zombie' is at his best

Is it just me, or is Jung's form at its best ever?

"The Korean Zombie" isn't improving by leaps and bounds between fights, but that's because he's a veteran and not a prospect anymore. But he continues to refine his game, and Jung is becoming a real threat in the featherweight division.

I know Edgar isn't the same fighter who won the lightweight title nearly a decade ago, but finishing "The Answer" is still very impressive. Jung is only the second fighter to accomplish that feat, and he did it the quickest.

It feels like Jung has finally created momentum. He sat out from August 2013 to February 2017 due to injuries and mandatory military service in South Korea. It's tough to stay relevant in such a fast-paced sport when you're inactive.

In 2019, Jung fought twice in a year for the first time since 2011, and the 32-year-old is the closest he's been to a title shot since challenging Jose Aldo in 2013. He isn't necessarily the clear-cut No. 1 contender at 145 pounds, but Jung may be the most deserving of the first shot at newly crowned champ Alexander Volkanovski.

Edgar's career winding down

Without a doubt, Edgar is a future UFC Hall of Famer.

But like any pro athlete, his body hasn't been reacting the same way it did when he was at the top.

Don't get me wrong: He's losing to the best of the best. There's no shame in dropping fights to Max Holloway, Brian Ortega, or Jung, three of the best featherweights on the planet. But how Edgar has been losing lately is concerning.

After being known for durability his entire career, Edgar has suffered two brutal TKO losses in his last four fights. Jung stumbled the 38-year-old just seconds into their fight Saturday morning, then spent a couple of minutes hunting for the ground-and-pound finish before finding it.

When Edgar starts losing in just minutes after a career of not getting finished at all, that's not promising. Edgar's impending bantamweight debut could be good for his career, but there's no question he's nearing the end of the road.

Damage adding up for Choi

Dooho Choi has suffered tons of damage in his past three fights, and changes need to be made if he wants to become a UFC contender.

Choi came back after nearly two years off due to mandatory military service only to lose to Charles Jourdain on Saturday in devastating fashion in front of his home country.

"The Korean Superboy" hurt Jourdain in the first round and nearly won. But the Canadian made a huge comeback in the second round, knocking Choi out with a vicious combination.

It was Choi's third straight loss. In the others, Jeremy Stephens knocked him out brutally, and he paired up with Cub Swanson to produce a "Fight of the Year" candidate in 2016.

That all came after Choi started his Octagon career with three consecutive first-round knockout wins. When he came onto the scene in 2014, it quickly seemed like he would become a force to be reckoned with in the division.

He's only 28, so there's still a lot of room to grow with plenty of upside. But the way Choi has been losing lately isn't good for his career longevity.
