The UFC is targeting a fight between lightweight champion Charles Oliveira and No. 1 contender Dustin Poirier for the main event of UFC 269 on Dec. 11, sources told Damon Martin and Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

The two fighters reportedly verbally agreed to the bout but haven't signed contracts yet.

Oliveira won the vacant 155-pound title with a second-round knockout of Michael Chandler in May, completing an incredible career turnaround after struggling with weight issues at 145 pounds.

It was the Brazilian's ninth straight victory and broke the record for the most finishes in the UFC (17).

Meanwhile, Poirier is 7-1 in his last eight fights, including most recently two straights wins over Conor McGregor.

The American won the interim lightweight title in a bout with Max Holloway in 2019 but fell short of undisputed UFC gold against Khabib Nurmagomedov later that year.

Amanda Nunes' bantamweight title defense against Julianna Pena has also been booked for UFC 269 and will likely serve as the co-main event.
