Report: D-Backs exercise Suárez's $15M option

The Arizona Diamondbacks are picking up their $15-million club option on third baseman Eugenio Suárez, a source told ESPN's Jesse Rogers.

Arizona elected to bring back Suárez for 2025 instead of paying him a $2-million buyout.

The D-Backs acquired Suárez from the Seattle Mariners in a three-player trade last offseason. His first season in the desert was a success, as he hit .256/.319/.469 with 30 homers and 101 RBIs over 158 games.

Barring an extension with the D-Backs, the 33-year-old is now on track to become a free agent next winter. Suárez signed his current $66-million contract in 2018 while a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

Arizona's decision to retain Suárez further depletes an already thinned-out crop of free-agent third basemen following Matt Chapman's midseason extension with San Francisco. With Suárez and Chapman unavailable, Alex Bregman stands as the lone marquee name at the hot corner.

Over 11 big-league seasons, Suárez owns a .248/.331/.457 slash line with 276 home runs and 831 RBIs. The Venezuela native is best known for his power, having hit 34 round-trippers during his All-Star season of 2018 and a career-high 49 with Cincinnati in 2019.
