Darryn Peterson, the No. 3 recruit in the ESPN 100 and the top-ranked guard in the class of 2025, announced Friday that he's committing to Kansas, according to ESPN's Jeff Borzello.

Peterson opted for the Jayhawks over Ohio State, Ohio, Kansas State, and USC, according to Paul Biancardi of ESPN.

The 6-foot-6 Ohio native is Kansas' first commit for the 2025 cycle. He's the second-highest-ranked recruit in the class to make his decision so far, behind only Cameron Boozer, who committed to Duke in October. A.J. Dybantsa, the top-ranked recruit in the class, has yet to publicly announce a commitment.

Peterson cited longtime Jayhawks coach Bill Self as a significant factor in his decision.

"Bill Self is a legendary coach, and he believes in me," he said, courtesy of ESPN. "He told me he will hold me accountable every day and make practices hard so the games will be easy.

"As a person, he is a high-energy guy who gives positive vibes. A guy you want to be around. He is relatable."

The 17-year-old is one of the most highly regarded all-around scorers in the country and was part of the United States squad that won gold at the 2023 Under-16 FIBA Americas Championship in Merida, Mexico. The Americans defeated Canada 118-36 in the final, with Peterson scoring 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting in 15 minutes.
