Gianluca Scamacca and Giorgio Scalvini's injury nightmares continued on Tuesday after Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi confirmed that the pair will undergo surgery and are out for the rest of the season.

Speaking ahead of Atalanta's Italian Cup quarter-final with Bologna, Percassi said: "Both will have surgery, it's a great shame".

"We're once again forced to have to do without for a long time two lads who could have done a lot for us and who didn't deserve this to happen to them," Percassi said to broadcaster Mediaset.

"We're really disappointed, both these injuries happened right near the end of the transfer window so we've had a lot to deal with."

Italy internationals Scamacca and Scalvini, both stars of Atalanta's Europa League triumph last year, had already missed most of the season after suffering serious knee injuries in the summer.

Scamacca has only played five minutes this term and was hit with a tear between the muscle and tendon in his right thigh during that short outing against Torino at the weekend.

Nothing has gone right for Scamacca since Italy flopped at Euro 2024, tearing a cruciate ligament in August and, as a result. losing his place as Azzurri and Atalanta striker to Mateo Retegui.

Scalvini meanwhile was stretchered off the field towards the end of Atalanta's 2-2 draw at Barcelona last week after falling awkwardly on his left shoulder which will now have to be operated on.

The 21-year-old has only started five matches this season and suffered his latest injury after replacing Saed Kolasinac in the second half in Catalonia.
