Report: Cardinals, Red Sox restart trade talks for Arenado

The Boston Red Sox might not be done building their roster for the 2025 season.

Boston has restarted trade conversations with the St. Louis Cardinals about third baseman Nolan Arenado in recent days, a source told MLB.com's John Denton.

The Red Sox are more interested in free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, but they appear to be in a bidding war with two other teams, according to Denton's source.

Pivoting to Arenado would still allow the Red Sox to improve their roster with the addition of the eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner. It would also likely mean position changes or fewer defensive reps for Rafael Devers or Triston Casas, with the pair probably sharing first base and designated hitter duties.

The Cardinals have been trying to trade Arenado most of the offseason and appeared to have a deal in place with the Houston Astros before the 33-year-old infielder used his no-trade clause to veto the swap.

Arenado had a down year for the Cardinals in 2024 and doesn't appear to be in the organization's plans as it shifts to a rebuild. He slashed .272/.325/.394 with 16 homers and 71 RBIs, but still maintained 14.5 K% while amassing 3.1 fWAR.

The six-time Platinum Glove winner has $74 million remaining on the final three years of his contract, with $10 million of it being paid by the Colorado Rockies.

The Cardinals have also reopened trade talks with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers about Arenado, Denton reported.
