Bichette: 'Haven't had any talks' with Blue Jays about contract extension

It doesn't seem like any progress is being made on an extension for the Toronto Blue Jays' other young star.

Despite being an impending free agent, shortstop Bo Bichette says he and the team haven't held contract discussions.

"No, we haven't had any talks," Bichette said, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. "But from my perspective, we all grow up wanting to be one of those guys that has an opportunity to stay with an organization for their entire career.

"I'm just focused on what I've got to do this year to help the team win and be the best version of myself. Whatever happens will happen."

Bichette is looking to get back on track in his age-27 season after a difficult 2024 campaign. The two-time All-Star missed 81 games due to injury and scuffled to a .598 OPS (71 OPS+).

It was a steep decline for a player who averaged 4.5 fWAR from 2021-23 while leading the American League in hits twice.

Much of the Blue Jays' focus appears to be on extending Bichette's teammate, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero is also slated to become a free agent at season's end.

"Vladdy is one of my best friends. ... We've talked about playing together forever since he was 18 and I was 19," Bichette said. "That's still a goal of ours."

Bichette owns a career .290/.332/.466 slash line with 723 hits and 343 RBIs through six MLB campaigns.
