New York Yankees left-hander Max Fried lost a no-hitter in an unconventional fashion during Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fried appeared to have a no-hitter going through seven innings. However, the official scorer changed the initial ruling of an error on an infield grounder by Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson in the bottom of the sixth inning to a single.

The official announcement wasn't made until Fried was about to take the mound for the bottom of the eighth inning. He then gave up a single to Jake Mangum to begin the frame.

"I had no idea (about the scoring change). I looked up and saw two hits," Fried said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "It is what it is. I'm just happy we got the win."

Fried allowed two hits with two strikeouts across 7 2/3 scoreless innings to improve to 4-0 on the campaign. The 31-year-old lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.42 in his first season with the Yankees after signing an eight-year, $218-million contract.
