All Serie A matches scheduled for Monday have been postponed after the death of Pope Francis.

Francis died at 88 on Easter Monday.

"Following the passing of His Holiness, Lega Nazionale Professionisti Serie A can confirm that today's league games in Serie A and Primavera 1 have been postponed," the league said in a statement.

Four matches were set to take place Monday. Torino were scheduled to host Udinese, Cagliari against Fiorentina, Genoa against Lazio, and Parma against Juventus.

The games have been rescheduled to be played Wednesday, the league announced.

The Italian Olympics committee has called on sporting federations to observe a minute's silence before all sporting events in Italy in honor of the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

Francis was elected as Pope in 2013, instantly becoming one of the most well-known soccer supporters in the world. He hailed from soccer-loving Argentina and met the late Diego Maradona twice during his tenure.

"I think we all now realize he's a (star)," Maradona said after meeting Francis in 2015, according to ESPN. "I'm Francis' top fan."

He was known to support Buenos Aires club San Lorenzo.
