Tom Wilson earned first star for his performance in Thursday's Game 2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Washington Capitals took notice.

The veteran winger registered a primary assist on the game-winning goal and tacked on an empty-netter to secure a split before the series shifts to Raleigh. Wilson also had three shots, two hits, and two blocks.

"He's been doing it all year long, it's nothing new with that guy," said linemate Connor McMichael. "When we need a spark, he's there to provide it. You need a big play or a big goal, he's always the one doing it. Can't say enough good things about him."

The Capitals were thoroughly outplayed in an overtime loss in Game 1, prompting head coach Spencer Carbery to express his disappointment in the team's effort. Carbery felt Wilson spearheaded Washington's turnaround Wednesday.

"I thought he was leading the charge tonight," Carbery said. "I thought, even before the play he makes on the power play and on the empty-netter, I just thought he was really engaged."

Washington had a 61.7% expected goals rate at five-on-five with Wilson on the ice in Game 2, according to Natural Stat Trick.

Wilson ranks second on the Capitals with seven points in seven playoff games this spring. He leads the team with 27 hits.

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
