The Toronto Blue Jays placed second baseman Andrés Giménez on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain, the team announced.

Infielder Michael Stefanic was selected from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. To make room for Stefanic on the 40-man roster, right-hander Dillon Tate was designated for assignment.

Giménez left Wednesday's game in Anaheim in the seventh inning after he sustained the injury, and he had an MRI on Thursday. Full details about the severity of the strain were not immediately revealed.

Although no timetable was provided, the team is hopeful that his IL stint won't be a long one, manager John Schneider said, per Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith. Giménez is improving, Schneider added, and will rest for the next couple of days.

Toronto acquired Giménez, a three-time Gold Glove winner, from the Cleveland Guardians in a four-player trade during the offseason. The 26-year-old has struggled offensively this season, hitting .195/.273/.305 in 36 games. He hasn't homered since clubbing three in his first five contests.

Giménez has been playing his usual stellar defense, though, as his six defensive runs saved lead all qualified second basemen.

Stefanic, 29, hit .319/.454/.372 with 13 RBIs, four steals, and 18 walks to 14 strikeouts across 119 plate appearances in Triple-A to start this year. The Idaho native has appeared in 90 big-league contests with the Los Angeles Angels over the past three seasons.

Stefanic and Ernie Clement, who's primarily manned third base this season, are options to see time at second while Giménez is out. Utility player Addison Barger also has some experience at the keystone in the minors.

The Blue Jays enter Friday's series opener against the Seattle Mariners sitting third in the AL East with a 17-20 record.
