The Tampa Bay Rays optioned outfielder Chandler Simpson to Triple-A Durham on Friday, the team announced.
Tampa Bay demoted Simpson to create a roster spot for fellow outfielder Jake Mangum, who was reinstated from the injured list after recovering from a left groin strain.
The 24-year-old Simpson caught MLB's attention with his game-changing speed. He stole 19 bases and was caught three times during his 35-game stint with the Rays while also hitting .285 with four doubles and 11 RBIs.
Simpson also ranked 96th percentile in both Whiff% and K%. However, he struggled defensively.
The converted outfielder posted a minus-three in outs above average and minus-two in arm value while playing all three outfield positions for the Rays.
