Red Sox acquire Alcala from Twins for infield prospect
The Boston Red Sox have acquired reliever Jorge Alcala from the Minnesota Twins for infield prospect Andy Lugo, the clubs announced Wednesday.
Alcala struggled mightily for the Twins to start the season, registering an 0-2 record with an 8.88 ERA and 28 strikeouts across 24 1/3 innings. He's had issues keeping the ball in the park, allowing 1.85 HR/9.
Alcala emerged in the 2024 season, posting a 1.56 ERA with zero homers allowed before the All-Star break. The 29-year-old fell apart in the second half, posting a 5.70 ERA while allowing eight home runs in 23 2/3 innings.
Lugo is hitting .265 with four home runs, 20 RBIs, and a .757 OPS in 151 at-bats at Single-A this season. The 21-year-old has primarily played first and third base, but he's also had a few appearances in left field.
