McCann signs with D-Backs after Braves release

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the signing of catcher James McCann to a major-league contract.

McCann joined Arizona following his release from the Atlanta Braves. His minor-league deal with Atlanta contained a rolling opt-out that allowed him to leave for a big-league deal elsewhere, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Arizona was short on catching depth after placing starter Gabriel Moreno on the injured list with a fractured finger Friday.

McCann didn't appear in a game with the Braves this season but slashed .305/.341/.510 with six home runs and 32 RBIs in 42 minor-league contests.

The veteran backstop last appeared in the majors in 2024, playing 65 games for the Baltimore Orioles.

McCann earned an All-Star nod in 2019 when he hit 18 homers and posted a .789 OPS for the Chicago White Sox.

To make room for McCann on the 40-man roster, Arizona designated catcher Aramis Garcia for assignment.
