Spurs take Harper with No. 2 pick

The San Antonio Spurs selected Rutgers star Dylan Harper with the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday.

Harper is the highest NBA draft pick in Scarlet Knights history. The left-handed floor general was an All-Big Ten third-team selection and named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team during his lone collegiate campaign.

Harper was third among freshmen in scoring and topped the 20-point mark on 17 occasions last season. He was the first Division I freshman in 20 years to tally 35 points or more in back-to-back games.

Harper is the son of five-time NBA champ Ron Harper.

Harper boasts elite size at the point and is a highly efficient finisher, having converted 69.5% of his attempts at the rim last season, according to Hoop-Explorer.com. His combination of strength and body control made him extremely effective when attacking downhill. Harper's ability to get into the lane drew extra defenders and provided opportunities to set up his teammates. He has the chance to be a multipositional defender at the next level with his length and frame. But at times Harper had lapses in focus or struggled to navigate screens.

NBA comparison: Cade Cunningham. Neither Harper nor Cunningham have elite athleticism, but both guards maximize their size advantage and excel at changing speeds. The Detroit Pistons star has developed into a strong lead playmaker, and it's possible Harper can follow a similar trajectory.
