Commanders' Quinn: McLaurin's trade request isn't a distraction

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said that wide receiver Terry McLaurin's trade request due to a contract dispute isn't affecting his team's focus in training camp.

"We love Terry. I'm really glad he's here," Quinn said, according to NFL Network's Bobby Kownack. "Hopefully, he's out practicing soon. We also understand there's the business side of this, things that (general manager) Adam (Peters) and his side and Terry and his reps are working it through.

Quinn added: "Somebody asked me if it's a distraction - it is not. Players today, they're more aware of contracts and things, maybe, than they used to be. They recognize that business part happens, as well, so for the team, we're just rocking and going and throwing some great practices."

McLaurin is entering the final year of the three-year, $68.3-million extension he signed in 2022. The deal carries a base salary of $15.5 million for 2025, making him the NFL's 17th-highest-paid this upcoming campaign, according to Over The Cap.

The 29-year-old officially requested a trade a few days ago. He's currently attending Washington's training camp, but isn't participating in on-field activities. McLaurin was seen greeting quarterback Jayden Daniels' mom and owner Josh Harris at practice on Saturday.

"Sometimes, those are the emotions and that's the human side of it," Quinn said. "Knowing there can be emotions, that's the ones he attached to at that moment.

"For me as the coach, give the support, give the insights, do you want advice? That's the way that you do it. But it is an emotional time. It's so damn important, and each player, it won't be quite the same in how that's happening."

McLaurin led the team in targets (117), receptions (82), receiving yards (1,096), and touchdowns (13) last season. The Ohio State product has recorded six-straight years of 900-plus receiving yards since entering the league as a third-round pick in 2019.
