Report: Nationals won't trade Robles for Marlins' Realmuto
The Washington Nationals may be the next club ready to trade for a Miami Marlins players, but it appears they won't be giving up their top prospect to do so.
After the Marlins traded outfielder Christian Yelich to the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, a source told Sirius XM's Craig Mish that Miami was heavily engaged in trade discussions with the Nationals about catcher J.T. Realmuto.
The Nationals, while very interested in Realmuto, are not going to trade top prospect Victor Robles to Miami, sources tell The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
With the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Nationals outfield - Adam Eaton is fresh off of a season where he tore his left ACL and Bryce Harper is a free agent at season's end - the Nationals don't appear ready to deal the youngster.
Rosenthal mentions Washington might be willing to part with outfielder Michael Taylor, although it's unclear if the Marlins would want him in a return for Realmuto.
Robles, 20, is the sixth-best prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, and has been a target of the Marlins since the beginning of January. The outfielder from the Dominican Republic debuted in the majors for Washington last season, hitting .250/.308/.458 with two triples and four RBIs in 13 games. He also hit .300/.382/.493 with 37 doubles and 47 RBIs in the minors.
Realmuto was one of baseball's best catchers in 2017, producing 3.6 fWAR - third among qualified backstops last season. The 26-year-old hit .278/.332/.451 with 17 home runs, 31 doubles, and 65 RBIs and would give the Nationals an upgrade over current starter Matt Wieters (.225/.288/.344), who is signed for one more season.
