Orioles' Davis ties MLB record for consecutive hitless PAs

Chris Davis is once again in the record books for the wrong reasons.

The Baltimore Orioles first baseman recorded an out in his lone plate appearance on Wednesday to tie Tony Bernazard's position-player record of 57 consecutive plate appearances without a hit, according to Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com. That came two nights after Davis set an MLB record for the longest streak of hitless at-bats by a non-pitcher.

Davis pinch hit for Renato Nunez in the ninth inning of Baltimore's 10-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics. After working the count to 2-2, he flew out to center field and officially tied Bernazard, who set the record in 1984.

"I felt like it was a good matchup. I really liked his swings," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said postgame, according to the Associated Press. "He was out in front of a couple changeups. I liked his takes. I thought he wasn't rushing out."

The 33-year-old, who's under contract with the Orioles through the 2022 season, is mired in the most miserable slump in baseball history. He hasn't logged a hit in his last 50 at-bats dating back to last September.

Although he hasn't recorded a hit in 57 plate appearances, Davis has reached base eight times over the stretch thanks to six walks, a hit by pitch, and a fielder's choice.

Davis is expected to be in Baltimore's starting lineup for Thursday's series finale against Oakland, according to WMAR's Shawn Stepner.
