'Very angry' Hellas Verona president blocked player payments
Relegated Serie A outfit Hellas Verona has a spot of trouble to deal with after reports emerged Tuesday that club president Maurizio Setti stopped paying his players in the final few months of the 2015-16 season.
ESPN FC reports Setti was "very angry" with his players' performances since the turn of the year and blocked wages as a result. However, Setti did later pay the balance owed at the end of the campaign.
"It's true, it was my decision in January to block all the salary payments because I was very angry," Setti said, according to ESPN FC. "Unfortunately, I was obliged to pay off all the arrears in recent days. It wasn't a choice based on financial issues, therefore."
Hellas Verona is set to receive a parachute payment after being relegated to Serie B, and will receive another if the club doesn't return to Serie A next season.
