Fiorentina snags Saponara from Empoli
Riccardo Saponara is slowly making his way back into the spotlight.
Fiorentina announced Saturday the signing of the former Italy U-21 midfielder on loan with an obligation to buy for a reported fee around €9 million.
The initial loan deal lasts 18 months, according to Sky Sport Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio.
Saponara made his professional debut for Empoli before joining childhood club Milan in 2013. It would prove a disastrous move for both parties. He played just eight Serie A matches for the Rossoneri between 2013-14 and 2014-15, and returned to Empoli in search of a new beginning.
Saponara, who admitted in 2015 he twice thought about quitting football, made a solid comeback last year, registering five goals and 11 assists.
Although he maintained his spot in Empoli's starting lineup this season, he's not been as productive.
A creative attacking midfielder who once drew comparisons to Kaka, the 25-year-old will add depth to Fiorentina's ranks.
Saponara could make his debut as early as Sunday against Genoa.
