Weeks after a medical issue prevented him from joining Juventus, promising Czech striker Patrik Schick completed a move to Roma on Tuesday for a potential club-record €42-million fee.

The Stadio Olimpico outfit signed the 21-year-old on an initial season-long loan from Sampdoria with an obligation to buy.

Schick also put pen to paper on a five-year contract.

The details of the deal are complex. Roma agreed to pay €5 million up front, a further €9 million to make the transfer permanent "upon the completion of certaining sporting objectives," and a maximum of €8 million in bonuses, according to a club statement.

In addition, the Giallorossi must hand over €20 million to Sampdoria by February 2020. If Schick is sold before that date, Roma will owe Sampdoria 50 percent of the transfer fee or €20 million - whichever is greater.

The total fee eclipses the €36 million that Roma paid to acquire Gabriel Batistuta from Fiorentina in 2000.

"Patrik is one of the brightest prospects in international football. We are all very satisfied to agree this deal especially because, despite being chased by a number of clubs, he has chosen us," sporting director Monchi said.

Ironically, Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero claimed at the start of the summer window that Roma didn't have the funds to make the transfer happen.

"Roma asked about him but they don't have the money. Tell (Roma president James) Pallotta to find the money. Without money, there is no song to sing," Ferrero said at the time.

Juventus did have the cash and quickly reached an agreement for a reported €30 million. Schick even posed for pictures in Juventus' training gear before undergoing a medical at the club's Vinovo training ground.

Upon discovering a heart problem - the severity of which Sampdoria has since disputed - Juventus reportedly attempted to alter the terms of the arrangement. The two sides decided not to finalise the transfer later in July.

Inter and Roma immediately entered the race for Schick's signature, and although the Nerazzurri at first appeared the favourites to sign him, their rival in the capital laid the groundwork for an intricate deal.

Schick emerged as one of the peninsula's hottest properties after scoring 11 goals in his first Serie A season. Sampdoria only signed the player last summer from for Sparta Prague for a paltry €4 million.
