Napoli won the Coppa Italia for the first time since 2014 on Wednesday, defeating Juventus 4-2 in a penalty shootout inside an empty Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

After 90 minutes of goalless action, Gennaro Gattuso's side was perfect from the spot, while Paulo Dybala and Danilo both failed to convert their attempts for the Bianconeri; the former saw Alex Meret turn aside his effort, while the Brazilian blazed his shot over the crossbar.

Arkadiusz Milik slotted home the decisive penalty, giving Napoli their sixth cup title. It's the first one for Gattuso, who has helped turn the Partenopei around since replacing Carlo Ancelotti in December.

Maurizio Sarri was also seeking his maiden domestic trophy, but - not for the first time this season - Juventus looked slow and lacked fluidity. Were it not for a miraculous late save from Gianluigi Buffon, Napoli, who created the better chances during normal time, wouldn't have needed penalties at all.

The match, played without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic, went straight to the shootout after Italian football authorities decided to scrap extra time as a means of minimizing injury risk after the lengthy layoff.

With the Coppa Italia now settled, the Serie A season will resume on June 20.

Juventus are back in action when they visit Bologna on June 22, while Napoli take their new silverware to Hellas Verona the following day.
