Conte leaves Inter after delivering club's 1st Scudetto since 2010
Antonio Conte and Inter Milan have agreed to part ways after just two seasons together, the club announced Wednesday.
The Nerazzurri - who just captured their first Serie A title since 2010, with Conte at the helm - will pay the bench boss roughly €7 million in severance, reports Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian.
Lazio tactician Simone Inzaghi and former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri are reportedly among the replacement options being considered.
"The club would like to thank Antonio for the extraordinary work that he has done, culminating in Inter's 19th top-flight title. Antonio Conte will forever remain a part of our club's history," Inter said in a brief statement.
Conte, 51, had one year remaining on his contract, but disagreements with the club's brass apparently prompted an early exit. Ownership group Suning is reportedly looking to cut costs this summer, with player sales viewed as the quickest way to recoup cash.
Conte, who has clashed with ownership in previous stints at Juventus and Chelsea, reportedly viewed the potential cuts and a lack of available transfer funds as detrimental to his ability to build on Inter's title-winning campaign.
Inter reported losses of €100 million last season, attributed primarily to the coronavirus pandemic.
Conte reportedly inked a deal worth €12 million per season when he joined the Milan-based outfit in 2019. He was characteristically outspoken about the need for squad investment during his spell at the San Siro.
There were suggestions Conte could leave Inter last year after their defeat in the Europa League final, and again when they were eliminated from this season's Champions League in the group stage.
He ultimately stayed long enough to dethrone his old team, Juventus, and deliver the Nerazzurri their first Scudetto in over a decade.
