Twitter reacts to Italy's stunning failure to reach World Cup
Disaster for Italy. Again.
The Azzurri will miss their second consecutive World Cup after a baffling 1-0 loss to North Macedonia in Thursday's playoff semifinal.
Aleksandar Trajkovski's goal in the 92nd minute in Palermo was enough to send the reigning European champion home - and the entire football world into shock. Here's how Twitter reacted to Italy's latest World Cup failure:

as Mel Brooks said, tragedy is when I cut my little finger, comedy is when you fall in an open sewer and die pic.twitter.com/mDhrgJBHtp
Italy’s last knockout game at a World Cup was the final that they won in 2006. They’ll have waited (at least) 20 years before they play another one.

Another improbable stat for the evening: Italy have lost twice in 42 matches over the last three-and-a-half years.

To Spain, and North Macedonia.
The jokes were flying
imagine inventing an iPhone app for following Italy in World Cup knockout games and still waiting for a chance to use it for the first time

My Italian friends basically pretended there wasn't a World Cup going on in the summer of 2018.

This gonna be a REAL fun Christmas time this year....
Good news for Italy: pretty much everyone qualifies for the 2026 World Cup

Matthew Upson has scored a goal in the knockout stages of the World Cup more recently than Italy & that will remain the case until at least 2026.
