Goliath felled: Juventus stunned by Udinese in opening match

We knew coming into the 2015-16 campaign that, after a summer rife with turnover, this would be a new Juventus squad that needed to do things a tad differently from last year.

It looks like the club took that suggestion a touch too literally to open the season.

Juventus, who hadn't lost at home in 47 matches - dating back to a January 2013 defeat at the hands of Sampdoria - was felled 1-0 by Udinese on Sunday, a stunning result that was procured by virtue of Cyril Thereau's 78th-minute goal.

Despite directing 21 shots at the opposition goal, the reigning Italian kings could never craft a chance to rival that of Thereau's, though the Bianconeri did create several opportunities that, on most days, would result in at least one tally.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri admitted as much after the match.

"It wasn’t an easy game but we did create plenty of chances. We should, however, have defended better for their goal," the bench boss said.

Juventus, which dropped a total of six points at home en route to running away with the Serie A crown last season, will look to bounce back next week in a mouthwatering contest against fellow title contenders Roma, and calm the nerves of throngs of supporters worried that the club could be in for major regression in 2015-16.

At least a modicum of history is on the Bianconeri's side.
