Hellas Verona fires manager Andrea Mandorlini
Hellas Verona has fired Andrea Mandorlini as manager following a winless start to the Serie A campaign that leaves the club in last place.
The 3-2 loss to Frosinone on the weekend was the final blow for Mandorlini, whose side has conceded a league-high 24 goals on top of scoring a league-low 10 goals.
Mandorlini had been the longest-serving manager in Serie A. He took the job in 2010 and successfully navigated the journey from the Italian third division all the way up to Serie A, clinching promotion to the top flight in 2013.
The following season, Verona produced one of its finest runs since winning the Scudetto in 1985. The Gialloblu came close to a Europa League spot - sitting in sixth place at one point - but ultimately finished 10th.
The 2014-15 campaign closed out with a 13th-place finish. But an injury to Luca Toni to start this season robbed Verona of its primary goal-scoring threat, and the rest of the team suffered.
"The club thanks Andrea and his staff who have, through dedication, unquestionable professionalism and intense passion, shared joys, sorrow but also victories on and off the pitch, who led the team from Lega Pro to Serie A," read a club statement. "We wish the best luck in future endeavours."
Verona faces relegation once again if it cannot turn around its fortunes. The club currently sits on just six points from 14 league matches.
