Diego Milito to retire following 2016 Copa Libertadores
Former Inter Milan and Argentina international striker Diego Milito has announced his plans to hang up his boots at the conclusion of the 2016 Copa Libertadores.
Milito, currently with Racing Club in the Argentine league, had originally planned to retire at the end of the regular season but has stuck around to compete in South America's version of the Champions League after his side booked a spot in the tournament.
"I am happy to say I will play another six months at the club," Milito told reporters. "I will stay to play the Libertadores. It was not easy to stop playing football, something I have been doing my whole life. We are in a moment to enjoy, a historic moment and one in a positive way. I think I can continue to this great group we have formed and enjoy another Libertadores."
Milito has been in and out of Racing's lineup for much of the last year, as he battles a recurring knee injury. He'll be hoping to stay healthy to see off his playing days in style - and, potentially, with a trophy.
"I could not do the preseason," Milito said. "I had pain in my knee and I said I'd rather not find out what it was. There were two paths; have surgery or not continue. But the support of so many people meant bit by bit it gets better.
"In June 2016 I'm going to retire, no matter what. This is my last six months as a professional player."
