Big changes for Milan 🔄
AC Milan had to do something to kick-start their season. In the end, they decided to upend their squad.
Alvaro Morata, signed in the summer, has been loaned out to Galatasaray. Noah Okafor, whose move to RB Leipzig collapsed at the last second, seems close to joining Napoli. Ismael Bennacer reportedly has a deal in place with Marseille. Milan had even agreed to send Fikayo Tomori to Tottenham but terminated the transfer shortly before Sunday's derby with Inter and watched as the Englishman put in one of his best performances in the 1-1 draw with their rivals.
Milan are now hoping to get goals from Santiago Gimenez, the 23-year-old striker they signed from Feyenoord for around €30 million. They're adding Joao Felix on loan from Chelsea and finalizing an agreement with Fiorentina over left-winger Riccardo Sottil. They'll also have to find a replacement for Bennacer and could bring forward a deal to sign Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci.
All of that is to say that the club is unhappy with the status quo. Milan are currently in eighth place in Serie A, five points outside the Champions League places and a whopping 19 away from the top of the table. They're involved in the Champions League playoffs but are completely unpredictable and may not qualify for the competition next season.
At least help is on the way.
Man City finally bolster midfield 🙌
Rodri underwent surgery on his torn ACL in September. Manchester City, who've gone in the tank since the Ballon d'Or winner's untimely injury, literally had months to do the background work necessary to identify, and sign, someone who could help stem the tide in his absence. Instead, it took them until deadline day, with a €60-million move for Porto's Nico Gonzalez on the verge of being completed.
This isn't for a lack of resources, either; City have spent well over €100 million this window, adding two young defenders and forward Omar Marmoush before shifting their attention to their most glaring area of need. It all seems a little backwards. Nevertheless, they figured it out in the end. Replacing Rodri is impossible, but Gonzalez, a Barcelona academy product, should be an immediate improvement on the porous midfield that Pep Guardiola keeps throwing out there in Rodri's absence.
Palace reject 'major' Guehi offer ❌
Despite signing Kevin Danso from Lens over the weekend, Tottenham remain on the hunt for another central defender who can help alleviate the pressure on Ange Postecoglou's injury-ravaged backline. Spurs, languishing in 14th place in the Premier League after a rotten run of form while Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have been sidelined, have scoured the market in the closing days of the window. Their latest target is March Guehi, but Crystal Palace, unwilling to sell their star defender on the final day of the January window, rebuffed a "major" offer for the England international, sources told David Ornstein of The Athletic.
Spurs' approach is indicative of the center-back market as a whole. With more teams playing higher lines and more aggressive pressing systems, coaches are desperate for mobile, quick center-backs who can cover large spaces and sweep up when the opposition either boots the ball long to bypass the pressure or manages to play through it. Danso, Guehi, and Axel Disasi, another deadline-day target for Tottenham, fit the bill.
Chelsea's outgoing market 👋
To the surprise of absolutely nobody, Chelsea are front and center once again on deadline day. Several Chelsea players, including the aforementioned Disasi, could leave the club, either on loan or in a permanent transfer. Ben Chilwell (Crystal Palace), Carney Chukwuemeka (Borussia Dortmund), and Joao Felix are already on their way out.
One player who's seemingly staying put, though, is Christopher Nkunku. The versatile French forward, 27, was linked with a return to the Bundesliga - Bayern Munich were keen all window - or a switch to Manchester United, but neither move will materialize, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. Chelsea never had any intention of letting him go on loan and always demanded a transfer fee of around £70 million to sanction a move. It's a disappointing result for Nkunku, who is immensely talented but has fallen down the pecking order under Enzo Maresca; he's started just three Premier League matches this season and needs a transfer to reinvigorate what looked like it would be an exciting career when he first arrived in west London.
