Portuguese title race could be settled in weekend's Lisbon derby
Portugal's title race could come to a thrilling end on Saturday as rivals Sporting Lisbon and Benfica face each other in a table-topping derby clash.
Both sides have 78 points with two matches remaining, with Sporting first on head-to-head basis after a 1-0 home win over Benfica in December.
Should Sporting win again they will be crowned champions for a second consecutive season, after lifting the title last year with current Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim at the helm.
Benfica, who won the Primeira Liga in 2023, can clinch the title on Saturday at their Estadio da Luz home with a victory by two goals or more.
Should Bruno Lage's Benfica win by a single goal the title race will run to the last day of the season, with the teams separated by goal difference should they finish level on points.
If Saturday's derby ends in a draw Rui Borges' Sporting will become champions on the final day, May 17, by at least matching Benfica's result at Braga in their home game against Vitoria.
